Abstract: | [Bestsellers and Blockbusters: Competitive Practices and Strategies in the Romanian Book Industry] This paper approaches an activity field that has undergone numerous spectacular changes in Romania during the last two decades or so. Publishers have (some of them successfully) tried to implement here practices and strategies that usually bring large profits on the international book market. Looking for bestsellers – even for literary blockbusters – has become a permanent preoccupation for the principal “players” in the Romanian book industry and in order to achieve this goal they do not hesitate to use various sales hooks within the frame of a very complex and very carefully organized production - distribution - merchandising process. At the same time, their strong commercial drive obviously does not exclude (on the contrary, it seems!) a kean interest in high quality standards – which, in the end, turns out to be fortunate for producers and consumers alike. |
