Abstract:[Re-reading Romanian Classics: Between the Identitary Goal and the Limits of the Aesthetic Canon]
The Postmodern phenomenon argues the literary canon issue as well as the validity of the aesthetic criterion in critically evaluating literature, fact that permanently points out the author’s standardization problem. The contemporary re-reading Romanian classics is placed under the same issues of cultural identity, as literary Postmodernity does. The critical revival of canonic values may be instrumented by means of particular critical discourse re-construction within the Postmodern ruptures, under the authority of the most important literary works, or through a sustained deconstruction of the literary canon itself, but always within the limits of aesthetic values. The analysis of classical writers’ works may become object of the metadiscourse itself. Such a discourse is, therefore, oriented upon the newest specialized approches belonging to different critics, thus mirroring various lecture patterns that canonic literary texts accept or not.
Focusing on some representative texts, different theoretical-methodological oppinions of the contemporary critics will be commented upon in this two-sided approach. On the one hand, the present paper will discuss the argumentative and persuasive dimmension of critical discourse, as well as the critical ideology within the text. On the other, the second point in focus is represented by the way in which the canon battle covertly implies re-defining cultural identity through authentical, valuable literary models.
