Abstract: | [The eros in Latin pre-neoteric epigrams: A show of lights, colours, emotions and temperatures] The symbol of the fire of love seems to have been a topos in pre-neoteric erotic poetry. The fire as an erotic symbol pertains to the favourite inventory of topics of lyrical and elegiac Latin erotic poetry, by means of metaphorical expressions like ignis, flammae amoris, but also including verbal forms developed from the idea of fire or conflagration due to consuming love: flagrare, conflagrare. This assertion may be illustrated with two epigrams assigned, by literary tradition, to different authors: Valerius Aedituus and Porcius Licinus. The two epigrams shall be analysed concerning the peerless spectacle of light and colour that functions not only as a torch in the darkness of the night, but also as the fire of passion that could ignite the entire universe. |
