Abstract:[The cries of market traders and itinerant craftsmen]
This is a short research on the cries called out by street vendors and itinerant craftsmen. Based on examples from Italian, French, Romanian and, to a lesser extent, Spanish and Swiss French collections, the formal types of cries are distinguished and their key characteristics described. A selection of cries are then presented, in the different linguistic varieties, for chestnut and watermelon sellers, fishmongers, rag-and-bone men and knife-grinders, which reveal a degree of affinity, mutual influences and linguistic and cultural osmosis between the European countries. The last paragraph provides a short overview of modern-day cries.
Key words:trade cries, linguistic varieties, morphological analysis, street vendors, itinerant craftsmen
