Abstract:[On false friends, with sincerity]
The purpose of this article is to examine the dynamic nature of false friends, by offering a description of their synchronic characteristics. A typology of false friends is also to be found here, along with an overview of the relation between false friends, translation, panonymy, homonymy and polysemy.
Total false friends tend not to cause problems, as, though morphologically similar or identical, their meanings are completely different, so it is difficult to find them in the same contexts. Partial false friends, however, need further analysis, because the similarity in morphological structure is matched by partial correspondence in meaning, so overlappings can occur. On the other hand, unlike total false friends, which result in poor expression and ineffective communication, partial false friends have a rather positive outcome, as they contribute to a semantic enrichment of words. That is why by false friends we designate solely total false friends, whilst partial false friends are considered a sub-class of semantic calques.
The focus of the paper is on lexical transfers from English, French and Italian to Romanian (and vice versa). The examples provided supply ample proof of the dynamism of words which lays at the basis of the lexical interference (code-mixing/negative transfer) caused by false friends. Yet, we call attention to the fact that a broader use is bound to produce a much greater transference, which explains why English false friends are much more numerous than French and Italian ones and have better chances of being accepted by normative studies.
