Abstract:[Three strategies of naming in Le Berger extravagant by Charles Sorel (1626–1627 and 1633–1634)]
The recent 2014 publication of a critical edition of Le Berger extravagant has disclosed many features of the polygraphic seventeenth-century French author. Sorel’s text with its parodic intent grafts onto the vast European pastoral production and also encompasses the field of onomaturgy. Three naming mechanisms taken up by Sorel in a parodic manner have been selected, which seem to be particularly significant: an onomasiological procedure reproducing the onomastics of pastoral genres but which generates surprising effects; a pseudo-anagrammatic procedure capable of evoking other fictional universes but with unexpected antiphrastic results; a semasiological procedure constructed according to a para-etymological method aiming to ridicule the onomastic frenzy of the authors of pastorals.
The vis comica of the onomastic creations present in the novel stems from the comparison between the common onymic repertoire and that of the pastoral literary tradition.
