Abstract: | [Naming the springs of Southern Italy (Part II)] In the wake of previous discussions on a similar topic (ICONN 2011), the present paper examines the official names of those Italian springs that flow throughout the Campania and Molise regions, as well as the neighbouring provinces of Aquila and Potenza. These names were identified using a census carried out by the Hydrographic Service of the Ministry of Public Works, in the 1930s, resulting in a rich corpus of more than 7500 terms. The Italian or Italianated form of the official name is listed, as well as the dialectal version. Starting with the latter, probable etymologies and meanings are also provided. The names are classified according to the semantic class to which we can attribute the “pegonimo” (phyto-, zoo-, hagio-, geo-anthroponyms etc.). |
