Abstract:[On certain names of settlements in France: Designations of “conventional” or “unconventional” origin]
In metropolitan France, a significant number of current words or lexical elements have become obsolete or their eventual derivatives may constitute a particularly rich toponymic semantic field. Every affixed (preposed or postposed) element has participated, participates and may participate again in the formation of a name of a more or less urban settlement. The following list is not exhaustive: bourg and bourgade, cité, commune, dorf, dorp, dref and trev-, ham, hamel and heim, ker, plessis (ancient), plé-, pleau, plebs, pleu-, plou-, polis, stad, uri and iri, vic and vicq, ville / villar / -d / -s / villers and wihr. It is possible that the employment of these terms was, is or will be considered “conventional” or “unconventional”.
