Abstract:[Names of social groups in old Hungarian settlement names]
In this paper I show the main semantic and structural types of old Hungarian settlement names. These types are the names derived from: 1) tribe names, 2) ethnonyms and 3) names of occupations. I focus on the differences existing between the various grammatical structures of these three name types (i.e. coining with or without a name formant). I also examine the chronological features of these name types (i.e. the appearance in time, the chronological features within a certain semantic name type). This kind of analysis has an extraordinary importance in Hungarian, as the picture drawn on the basis of these traits characterises the settlement name-stock of present-day Hungary as well. Moreover, this semantic and structural typology enables us to compare this name stock with the toponymicon of other languages.
Key words:old Hungarian place names, semantic and structural types, chronological characteristics of different name types
