Abstract:[Place names as historical-geographical indicators in enriching an HGIS for the monasteries in the Buzău Subcarpathians]
The region of the Buzău Subcarpathians has been home to one of the largest monastic centers from the mediaeval Romanian states, next to Neamț and Vâlcea. Based on traditional sources – historical documents, gazetteers, old maps and toponymy –, which were validated during more than eighty fieldwork campaigns, we managed to create an HGIS database containing a total of one hundred and twenty eight monasteries, from which ninety nine have been surely or approximately located. yet their number is rather small if we take into account other numerous place names which hint at the existence of undiscovered monasteries. The present paper aims at providing an approach for extending the historical-geographical database of monasteries from the Buzău Subcarpathians, using place names and a somewhat new type of thematic map that employs hexagonal binning.
