Abstract: | [The name Mary and its variants in the German and Dutch onomastic heritage of the 19th century] The biblical name Mirjam, which is of Hebrew origin, became Maria in Europe, a Greek-Latin form. This proper name was ranked in the past among the most popular female names in Europe, in Germany and the Netherlands among others. In Germany, however, Maria appeared quite late, in the 15th century. There are many forms that have been created form Maria, such as Maaike, Marietta, Mariëlle, Marianne, Marijke or Marilijn. Based on 19th-century Catholic and Protestant baptismal registers from the parishes of two cities, Brunswick in Germany and Amsterdam in the Netherlands, the frequency and popularity of the name Maria and its variants are examined. |
