Abstract: | [Chrematonymy as an “unconventional” class of onymy] The purpose of this paper is a theoretical presentation of the nature of chrematonyms as an “unconventional” class of proper names, similar to the “traditional” and “conventional” classes of onymy. The author proposes the thesis that the class of chrematonyms does not dissociate itself from the general category of proper names and it is not associated only with the contemporary era. However, today their existence is more obvious because of the massive proliferation of chrematonymic units in various spheres: economic, commercial, social, and cultural. In many situations, chrematonymy undergoes the process of special acculturation because of its functions operating transversely through various onomastic classes. The chrematonymic point of view provides an interesting perspective on certain communicational and cultural phenomena, such as the use of slogans accompanying proper names in social communication. |
