Abstract: | [Semantic modification of global onyms in Russian linguoculture] In the present paper, by the term “global onym” we understand a proper name (Hollywood, Oxford, Davos, Disneyland, Barbie and suchlike) that is used worldwide and thus has a global dimension. Such names are characterized by repeatability in speech, which leads to their fixation in various language collectives and stipulates semantic transformations. We show how global onyms develop plural forms and several figurative meanings, and how they eventually acquire the ability to depict the contemporary Russian systems of values. The study is based on excerpts of Russian journalistic texts and Internet communication. |
Key words: | global onym, appellativization, pluralization, figurative meaning, polysemy |
