Abstract: | [Confession and name-giving: First names of Catholic and Protestant women in Dutch speaking areas in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries] In the past, religion used to play a very important role in the giving of proper names. The Reformation and Counter-Reformation had a big influence on the attribution of names among Catholics and Protestants in Europe and, consequently, in Dutch speaking areas as well. What was the situation of names of women who lived in the Netherlands two centuries ago and how did it change in the twentieth century? Did religion have a significant influence? What was the difference between the names of the Catholics and Protestants? To answer these questions, this paper examines and compares names of baptized girls from the birth registers of the Catholic and Protestant parishes in Amsterdam (Netherlands) and Leuven (Flanders). |
