Abstract: | [Given names, which are also saints’ names, serving as date identification in folk sayings, in various customs and idioms as well as in riddles] The Transylvanian-Saxon dictionary is the most significant work in the history of the Transylvanian-Saxon dialect, as the linguistic thesaurus contained therein documents the life of the Transylvanian-Saxon population. The vocabulary, which is illustrated by means of vivid idiomatic samples, also includes toponymic descriptions (in the wider sense of the word), but no last names, only given names, usually saints’ names which are very popular and even appear as generic names, as exemplified in different sound variants. It is the purpose of this paper to elaborate on some given names/saints’ names; to demonstrate how these names have come to play a role in date identification in daily life, in folk sayings, various customs and idioms as well as in riddles. The case samples have been selected from the Transylvanian-Saxon dictionary. |
