Abstract: | Firstly, my paper reviews the typological model that served as the theoretical basis for river naming. Secondly, this level of analysis involves the presentation of functional-semantic classes used in naming. As regards the linguistic elements used to form hydronyms, one can see that they may refer to the type of place into which the denotata can be classified. This function is called designation of the type of place (DT function) and it is always expressed by a hydrographic common name. On the other hand, the linguistic elements present in hydronyms may refer to the characteristics of the body of water (C function). Furthermore, one can also note the use of already existing names, a pattern that can be described by introducing the denominative function (D function). It is only the real, existing name that has this function, and its role – embedded in a new name – is identical to the one of its original toponymic meaning: referring to the denotatum. Hydronyms containing a name component that denotes the place itself (D function) may display several structures: there are mono-componential names (D structure), hydronyms with a hydrographic second component (D+DT structure), and hydronyms with a first component denoting a feature (C+D structure). While the first type is fairly well represented, the last one records only a few examples. An already existing, borrowed hydronym or one that has an internal genesis may be preceded by a component whose distinctive function is to refer to a characteristic of the body of water. This name type has the structure C+D and its representatives are mostly names of river branches or backwaters of the river denoted by the denominative component. At the end of my paper, before listing the concluding remarks, I synthesise the results of my research and localise the names on the map of Romania, on the territory of the basin of the Criș rivers. |
