| Abstract: | [An emerging process of naming public ways: Institutionalizing and reinventing modes of referring to public ways in a French Alpine community in 2013] In 2008, the French postal administration asked the municipality of Le Grand-Bornand to give an official name to its many public carriage ways, and to number each building, as a solution to growing difficulties in delivering mail. The reform was completed by early 2013, when new names and a numbering system were introduced in postal practices and geocoding programs. Up to that time, public ways, as a rule, did not have a name; the widespread use consisted in referring to them by means of definite descriptions. We intend to characterize these new odonyms in relation to the pre-existing modes of referring to public ways, and to show how these new names bring about conceptual impoverishment. |
