Abstract:[Portuguese villages and the medieval naming pattern]
The naming system that characterises the current public spaces of Portugal, especially its villages, originates in the Middle Ages, although one can find the same pattern of anthroponymic motivation since the time of the Roman rule in the Iberian Peninsula. This paper aims to present some initial data in general terms, in accordance with toponymic stratigraphy, highlighting, in the morphological structure of the toponyms, the presence of the possessive suffix that is attached to the anthroponym which refers to the possessor (owner). At a more specific level, the research aims at analysing some toponyms in Braga, an area that is of great interest in the study of the formation of Galician Portuguese.
Key words:Portuguese anthropo-toponym, Portuguese Middle Ages, genitive suffix in place names
Language: Spanish
