Abstract:[The (tasty) inventory of names of pizzas in Italy]
After analysing the menus of more than 500 Italian restaurants and catalogues of recipes on the Internet, an inventory of about 4,000 different names of pizzas was created. The naming system in this gastronomic field can be considered to lie at the intersection of: a) commercial names; b) odonymy, as a classic model of tripartition between descriptive-traditional names, celebrative-commemorative names and symbolic names grouped thematically; c) the phenomena of lexicalisation and transonymy (i.e. proper names becoming simple names and vice versa, as well as the transformation of proper names into different types of proper names); d) the linguistic analysis of morphological, syntactic and sociolinguistic aspects regarding the inventory, with particular attention paid to the many bizarre metonymies that characterise it.
Key words:names of pizzas, commercial names, name formation, lexical phenomena
