Abstract:[Names of public spaces: Diversity in the service of theory]
Several researchers think non-descriptiveness is an important feature in the definition of proper names: for instance, it is impossible to distinguish two individuals only thanks to their first names. However, though this is true, it does not mean that we can establish a rule from a single example. If one speaks of anthroponyms only, it is absurd to say that proper names in general have no descriptive content.
Some names of public spaces are probably the best counterexample against the idea of empty names: station names or names of shops and restaurants usually have, for practical or commercial reasons, a descriptive content.
Onomastic research must take into account the heterogeneity of the class analysed, because a broader and more complex approach can be developed when taking into consideration other types of names than when we focus only on toponyms and anthroponyms.
