Abstract:[Place names in Transylvanian Latin inscriptions (15th-19th centuries)]
The paper, based on a corpus of nearly 300 Latin inscriptions from the Saxon churches of Transylvania, is an approach from both an epigraphic and a lexical point of view: the names of towns and villages occur in Latinised form, usually abbreviated by means of suspension. There are two peculiar features of these names to be noticed: as the inscriptions are placed in situ, in public view, the structure “hic, haec, hoc + noun” is largely used (pastor huius loci/ecclesiae, decus aedis huius sacrae and others); the Latinised place names are derived from Saxon, Latin or Hungarian names as bases, with the Latin suffix -(i)ensis (rarely -anus, -acus, -inus, -ius).
Key words:Latin inscriptions, place names, abbreviation by suspension, Latin derivation, suffix -ensis
