Abstract:[The meaning of intention in the pagan anthroponyms of Roland’s Song]
The purpose of this paper is to analyse the complex interplay of pagan anthroponyms and their connotations from the perspective that a medieval receiver was able to have. The adopted approach is based on Boutet’s syncretic theory and Looper’s narrative conception. The meaning of a speaker’s intention is considered according to the evocative power of the anthroponyms and their degrees of transparency, thus defining a Manichean vision that shows a symbolic prototype of the non-Christian world. It so contributes to one of the functions of the epic, which is to sublime a historic event, to glorify Christendom and the Capetian power in place and condemn anything that opposes it.
