Abstract: | [Name quest, identity quest with Patrick Modiano] Analysing two novels by French author Patrick Modiano, Livret de famille and Rue des boutiques obscures, this study traced the close connection between the characters’ identities and their names. The quest for the origins, the quest of the father and that of the real name, the search for official papers that should document one’s existence are recurrent themes in these novels. I analysed Modiano’s interest for composite names that reveal the character’s complex and ambiguous identity. |
