Abstract: | [Giving a name vs giving the right name in Pascal Quignard’s fictional texts] This study starts from the (unexpressed) premise that onomastics was not a field to which Pascal Quinard (Verneuil-sur-Avre, 1948), a learned and arcane writer, may have given special attention. This is because, apparently, in his fictional texts (which are, in fact, the object of the present analysis) characters do not bear names with salient meanings. Nevertheless, a more in-depth investigation proves the contrary: erudition, which is a trademark of Quinard’s texts par excellence, also becomes obvious in the construction or choice of characters’ proper names. Thus, the decoding of proper names is only possible via other texts, most often old and obscure ones, in a kind of rereading that is reminiscent of palimpsests. |
