Abstract:[Avra[ha]m and Šara(i): when a linguistic redox wins infertility]
Starting from a reflection on value, nature and power of the ‘name’ in the ancient word (particularly referring to the Egyptian and Hebrew ones), this contribution aims to introduce the emblematic example of name change as shown in Gen. 17,3 ss. e Gen. 17,15 ss., interpreted and discussed in its traditional valence (from gematria to some more general aspects of the mystic of the alphabet).
Through what might be called as a sort of “linguistic redox”, working on the phonic matter of the two names (guaranteeing the substance in quantity and, at the same time, as changing the physical qualities), God modifies their profound nature, healing – inter alia – the couple’s infertility.
Key words:name change, gematria, Hebrew, mystique, redox
