Abstract:[Nicknames of Germans in Arad county in the 19th-20th centuries]
People have got first (or baptism) names and family names, but some of them are more easily identified by their nickname(s) or byname(s), or “derisive name(s)”, as they were once called. The latter are unofficial, extra names, based on certain traits that close acquaintances or friends can easily recognize in the name bearers: for instance, der Lahme (‘the lame’), der Tapfere (‘the brave’), der Schreckliche (‘the horrible’), der Dicke (‘the fat man’). These names can be praising or derisive. The present paper deals with the way in which nicknames were created for the Germans in the county of Arad, in the context of their peaceful coexistence in that area with Romanians, Hungarians, Serbians, Slovaks, Bulgarians, and others.
