Abstract:[Surnames and bynames of Aromanians in the southern part of Serbia]
The aim of the paper is to analyse some family names and bynames of Aromanians in the southern part of Serbia. Southern Serbia is a unique geographical unit, different from the neighbouring areas through its physical and anthropological geography. This area has got rich and diverse culture, multiethnicity, a synthesis of nations and nationalities that have had the opportunity to live here. There are just a few written documents about the history of the Vranjsko pomoravlje region; however, the things that were discovered orally gave a completely new view on the whole area. It is confirmed that here there once lived a special non-Slavic group of people called Tzintzars, Greek-Vlachs or Aromanians. However, they were different from the group of Aromanian stockmen who had been coming from Macedonia and taking pastures on lease. People called them Ashans or Greeks. In Vranje and its wider surroundings, there still exist families who are descendants of Aromanians. I will name just a few of them: Sirminci, Baba Alt’nini, Lunginci, Bicinci, Biljarci and others. Older people from the Biljarci family knew some of their relatives in Ohrid and Wallachia. A certain number of old families from Vranje were created by means of merging with the population of Vlachs of this area or, more exactly, with Aromanians/Tzintzars. Examples of this merger are families who today bear the nicknames or names Vlaščiki, Vla or Vlainci. Kutzovlachs have families with the same origins on the father’s side, and they are all one clan. Significant marks of one clan are their mutual surname, slava, and nickname. Aromanian family names and bynames are very rich and very interesting for more thorough studying for scientists in different fields.
