Abstract:Petru Caraman (ethnologist and slavist, 1898-1980) and Gh. Ivănescu (linguist, 1912-1987) were two eminent representatives of Iaşi’s philological research tradition; despite their age difference, they were bonded by a strong friendship. They were both excluded, following the communist regime’s education “reforms”, from the University (1949), and subsequently nurtured an interesting written correspondence (1950-1960). This article brings forth and discusses a number of eight letters from Petru Caraman to Gh. Ivănescu, all written in the aforementioned period. The letters are of exceptional documentary value, as they attest not only Petru Caraman’s personal integrity, but also the highly moral character of the dialogue itself – which, we need not forget, was occurring in the communist era, an age of tragic historical circumstances for Romania.
