Abstract:We propose a reflection on different forms of stereotypes and representations that still function in contemporary society, with regard to individuals that are bilingual or multilingual by birth. These forms are associated with the fear and “the worry” of an atypical (commonly hybrid) otherness, defined in terms of identity construction. Our reflection will focus not only on multiple examples mentioned in specialized literature (in terms of bi- and multilingualism), out of which some names are quite famous: the writer Elias Canetti or the linguist S. Wurm (who spoke forty foreign languages), but also on common cases.
Key words:identity, stereotype, bilingualism by birth, representation, multilingualism
