Abstract: | [Scientia divina: between the Dionysian Exemplarism and the Augustinian Essentialism] Starting from the interpretation set forth by scholars such as O. Boulnois, J. Schmutz and J.-L. Solère (in their work Le contemplateur et ses idées: modèles de la science divine du néoplatonisme au XVIIIe siècle) regarding the models of the divine science, I intend to show that the authors’ inventory of the concept of scientia divina neglects its specific moments. These moments can only be recovered by an alternative reading of these issues. I believe that the “unthought” of the relationship between the divine science and the human science consists in a distinction which is insufficiently explored by the aforementioned authors, namely the relationship between the Creator and His creation. The “standard” model of the divine science (“God as generator of ideas”) contains in itself a conflict which is not adequately addressed by any of the authors who contributed to the quoted work. The goal of my research is to provide a close analysis of the conflict born from the crossing between the Dionysian exemplarism and the Augustinian essentialism, with an emphasis on the philosophic and theological consequences that this situation has generated. |
