| Abstract: | [Errors in Vera Călin’s Translation of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations] Although it is one of the most popular novels in the world, Great Expectations by Charles Dickens has only three translations into Romanian (Vera Călin – 1949, Cornelia Nițulescu – 1992 and Cristina Jinga – 2008). The best known and most frequently re-edited is Vera Călin’s translation, published for the first time in 1949 and re-edited for four times, in 1962, 1968, 1969 and 1992. Unfortunately, it is full of translation-errors which often make the text in Romanian sound inappropriate for the specificity of our language, or rather bizarre or hilarious. The mistakes in Vera Călin’s translation are pragmatic, semantic, idiomatic, linguistic and stylistic, and the cultural differences between the source-text and the target-text usually lead to an inadequate adaptation to the communication situation. Therefore, this translation fails to fulfil its function of a replica of the original into another language – its effect on the Romanian readers is not the same as the one on the native speakers of English – and, in many parts of the text, it does not live up to the receptors’ expectations. In Christiane Nord’s opinion, errors or inadvertencies like these are considered “non-functional translations”, which break the textual rules related to the function and type of text, coherence, linguistic, social and cultural conventions. This article is focused on the analysis of the examples that illustrate all these types of “non-functional translation” and proposes other versions, meant to improve the target-text at the linguistic and stylistic level. |
