Abstract: | [Myth and Narrative Pattern in Stefan Heym’s Novel Ahasver, le Juif Errant] Stefan Heym’s novel Ahasver, le Juif Errant, develops three narrative paths, corresponding to three different chronological levels (a narrative level, symbolic, which refers to a primordial time, a second level which takes place in the 16th century and a third one, in the 20th century). The link between the narrative paths is made through the passage of the protagonist from one level to another. Ahasver has a double role: related to the shift between the levels and as invariant. Structural elements such as the passages from one level to another and the couple Ahasver-Lucifer are related to a myth (The Wandering Jew). The repetition of certain scenes and characters relate to the pattern-like characteristic of the rite. |
