Abstract: | A quick overview of the criticism devoted to Poe's Pym highlighted the importance of establishing a solid, well-documented reading perspective as a prerequisite for successfully interpreting this controversial tale. Textual clues of Pym, pointing to Poe's youth and to his embarking on behalf of imaginative writing, suggested the literary perspective, and, within that perspective, the poetic initiation of young Poe, symbolized through the protagonists' ordeal on the seas. The couple Augustus-Pym was assimilated to Poe's otherness or inner creative unity. From this unity were then derived the structure of the novel, the sense of the journey, the valuation of its component parts and the dynamic principle of Poe's sea tale. |
