Abstract:Our paper deals with the role and function of mythical hero, as an archetype, in André Gide’s work. The first part of our paper presents the importance of this figure all over Gide’s creation and we show that Gide build up a hero-centered mythology, preferring the mythical hero to the mythical situation. We also stress that there are two mythical heroes recurrent in Gide’s creation, Narcissus and Theseus, embodying the myth of the creator. The second part of our paper presents the functions and the characteristics of the mythical hero: we consider that three of them are important: double ascendance, the ambiguous position, half- human, half god and the twin relation.
Key words:the mythical hero, the hero-centered mythology, the myth of the creator
