| Abstract: | In addition to the numerous beneficial effects they had on nineteenth-century English society, the mechanisms of the Industrial Revolution also permeated the literary activity of significant writers of the day. This article is intended to comment on the influence of industrialism on literature and, consequently, on the emergence of a more mechanical view of human nature in mid-Victorian literature by resorting to a novel written by the prototypical Victorian writer, Charles Dickens, i.e. Hard Times.
