The aim of this paper is to describe the way which has brought to today’s communicative approach in second language acquisition. On one hand, there are taken into account the main methods that have been applied for teaching of second (foreign) languages. On the other, there are explained the principal linguistic and discourse theories which have changed the perspective on what to learn a second language means.
