Abstract:Chico Buarque, Brazilian, composer, singer, lyricist, film maker and writer is considered a major artist of our times. He is the author of the remarkable book « Estorvo », « Embrouille », in French, published by Gallimard éditions.
The narrator is an anti-hero, without initiative, lost between beer and marijuana, who hears his door bell. In a numb state between sleep and vigil, he feels in threat and commences a pilgrimage seeking an indeterminate person. Dreamlike episodes and awake dreams follow, unreality intermingles with reality.
The object of this paper is to analyze the challenges its complex vocabulary poses to the translator. To commence, the French translation of the novel epigraph contains 22 words and took into consideration semantic and phonetic aspects, whilst the original Portuguese version contains 21 words. The theme of this paper will be the study of solutions to translate arguably untranslatable expressions of colloquial Portuguese into French, without deviating from the author’s original intention.
