| Abstract: | Making use of the Index Translationum, we have been able to establish some major tendencies in the field of francophone literature and translation from a quantitative perspective. First of all, it is striking that authors that are sometimes referred to as « francophone », but that do not really originate from regions that are traditionally thought of as « francophone » in a geographical sense, are most translated (Beckett, Green, Ionesco, Gary/Ajar, Semprun, Kundera, Kristof, Makine… ). What is more, in as far as francophone authors « proper » are concerned, only Tahar Ben Jelloun and Amin Maalouf, two writers of Arab descent, belong to the group of 100 most-translated authors writing in French. Next, a survey of the list of the top 1000 authors in terms of translation shows that writers from the Arab world occupy the first place, followed by authors of African origin, with writers from the Antilles/Caribbean coming third. A closer look at the languages into which francophone literature is translated, reveals that such translations from French occupy a prime position in literary translation into Dutch. Indeed, for every three published translations from French into Dutch, there are two francophone texts. The contrast is less striking, but still significant for German and Italian, whereas for English it is virtually negligible. On the other hand, the number of translations from French into Spanish is considerably smaller than the number of original French language publications, and this trend is even more marked for Portuguese. |
