The present paper stands for an analysis of the derivatives formed with the prefix bio- in Romanian, of their structure and etymology. Bio- is one of the most productive prefixes in current Romanian and is usually used to form nouns and adjectives required by various specialized languages. In Romanian, bio- is able to combine either with various independent words (nouns or adjectives) or with suffix-like compounding elements. Etymologically, the words derived with bio- are borrowed from different languages (French, German, English). Especially during the two recent decades, the frequent occurrence of these compounds and their intrinsic diversity within the Romanian vocabulary have proved the potential of the Romanian language, i.e. its lexical creativity.
