Abstract:Dimitrie Cantemir is the first Romanian historian in the scientific meaning of the notion. Because of his works „Description of Moldavia” and „The Growth and Decay of the Ottoman Empire” he became the most important Romanian author of Latin language. The scientific style of his works has also artistic valences, expressed, at the syntanctical level, by the interest in formal harmony and syntactic symmetry. In this essay, we have illustrated the Cantemir’s preoccupation for style using two of his less known works, De antiquis et hodiernis Moldaviae nominibus („On the ancient and recent names of Moldavia”) and Historia Moldo-Vlachica ( „The Moldo-Valachian History”).
