Abstract:The Romanian communities from the Hungarian Plain form a number of peripherical compact groups, which maintained their identity features after 1920, mainly because their closed character. In an area that is well-defined geographically and spiritually, these islands whith specific identity – hereafter reffered to as identity areas- became at present extremely vulnerable.
The aim of this work is to present the way how the Romanians from Hungary define their own identity area, and how this is reflected in folk stories told by contemporary story-tellers.
The stories are based on the presentation of some local heroes related to the establishment of their settlements, anti-heroes with unusual behavior, or through description of everyday aspects of family life.
Most of the stories are memorised elements of oral history of the economic and social conditions of those days. Their real value of these stories is due to the fact that they are – still- “alive”, transmitted in the localy spoken dialect of the Romanian language, strenghtening the cohesion between the members of the group.
