The paper looks at pseudo-reduplication, reduplication and repetition in pidginized and creolized Arabic. Particular attention is paid to the status of reduplication and to whether the occurrence of reduplication can be traced back to the lexifier and/or the substrate languages. The findings adduce further evidence in support of the claim (Bakker 1995, Mühlhäusler 1997, Bakker 2003, Bakker and Parkvall 2005) that reduplication represents a diagnostic feature which distinguishes creoles and expanded pidgins from jargons and stable pidgins.
