Abstract:In this study, we will analyze the phases through which the class of discourse markers of concession has completely transformed during the period between Old French and Pre-Classic French. We analyze the tree main markers cepandant (Engl. however), toutefois (Engl. however), and pourtant (Engl. however), showing, on the one hand, how through processes of grammaticalization followed by pragmaticalization these words – which originate in nouns, verbs, and pronouns – change their category, and become adverbial elements, and, on the other hand, how they acquire a concessive value – their only meaning in Contemporary French – starting from different meanings, such as time, space and manner, cause.
To sum up, we formulate a hypothesis about the change of semantic model, which has made possible all these changes.
