Abstract: | While trying to draw the semantics of exile and explore its origins, we are employing a distinction made by Svetlana Boym upon the concept of nostalgia, as fundamental state of the estranged individual. Boym decomposes the word and glides the accent over one of the two joined phonemes forming it. Thus, a first type of nostalgia would be the one focusing on nostos, symbolizing the return to the mythical space, somewhere on the utopic island, where “the great country” should be rebuilt. It is a reconstructive type of nostalgia, a collective one. On the other hand, a second type of nostalgia focuses on algia and does not presume to reconstruct the mythical space of the country of origin. This particular type of nostalgia is, in Boym’s words, “in love with distance and not the referent itself”. |
