In the short story “Three Undisclosed Letters” Irvin D. Yalom, psychotherapist and contemporary novelist, describes the case of the patient Saul C., a high achieving neurobiologist, in a situation of extreme stress, because of three letters he receives at intervals of several days and does not have the courage to open them. The barrier of communication generated by the state of anxiety has devastating consequences for Saul’s psychic, who expected Dr K.`s opinion, regarding the quality of a common research that he contributed to in the greatest extent. Being anxious, he has serious concerns about Dr K.’s verdict, living a terrible fear, continuosly, all three letters remaining unopened. Because of the lack of confidence in himself, he has constant stress; during the treatment at the psychotherapist, Saul finds out that Dr.K. died, opens the letters and notices that the deceased had an exceptional opinion about him as a specialist and a person. This news makes him to be a normal human being again and calms him.
În povestirea Trei scrisori nedesfăcute Irvin D. Yalom, psihoterapeut şi romancier contemporan, descrie cazul unui pacient Saul C., un neurobiolog de renume, într-o situaţie de stres extrem, datorită a trei scrisori pe care le primeşte la interval de şapte zile şi pe care nu are curajul să le deschidă. Bariera comunicării generată de starea de anxietate are consecinţe devastatoare asupra psihicului lui Saul, care aşteaptă opinia doctorului K., privind calitatea unei cercetări comune. Anxios, se îngrijorează profund în legătură cu verdictul doctorului, trăind o frică teribilă, continuă, cele trei scrisori rămânând nedesfăcute. Datorită lipsei de încredere în sine, trăieşte un stres constant; în timpul tratamentului la psihoterapeut, Saul află că doctorul K. a murit, deschide scrisorile şi observă că decedatul avea o opinie excepţională despre el ca specialist şi ca persoană. Această veste îl face să redevină o fiinţă umană normală şi îl calmează.
