The history of the terms that designate measurement units offers, through etymology, important information about the origin, chronology and movement of words. The measurement units belong to the scientific vocabulary and implicitly to the scientific terminologies. Many are based on the names of the inventors and of the places where the inventions have been made. In time, some names have undergone changes of meaning and have migrated from the specialized vocabulary to the common vocabulary.
