Abstract:This comparative critical study starts from the idea that the twentieth century hermetic poetry requires serious reconsideration because it is often treated superficially from the thematological point of view. Even the concept of hermetic poetry was not completely classified in literary theory and this creates confusion in analytical approaches. Furthermore, comparative analysis of representative European hermetic poetry of the twentieth century and the lyrical attitude of poets - preference for encoded messages - are forms of protection against superficiality. Our work aims to explore some functions of the lyrical imagery of poets such as Eugenio Montale, Giuseppe Ungaretti and even Ion Barbu, all of them wellknown as authors of hermetic poetry. In their poems, myths, symbols, even logical discourse have hidden or overturned meanings. However, we will notice that their aesthetic behavior is very similar and all the signs of the poetic world, if deciphered and understood, offer a state of total creative specific freedom.
