Abstract:This article, focusing on the evolution of two kinship nouns inherited from Latin, noru (lat. nŭrus) and soru (lat. sŏror), presents their morphosyntax as it is reflected in the oldest Romanian texts. We argue that they have preserved intact the original inflectional ending in the singular form (although -u is usually associated with masculine nouns) and consequently the substitution of the initial inflectional ending -u with (which is usually associated with feminine nouns) is a later phenomenon. Their morphological behaviour is controlled by the early suffixation of the possessive affixes to the kinship nouns. Taking into account the value of the Cyrillic graphemes, we have corrected most of the erroneous conjectures concerning the date of the soru, noru > soră, noră reconstruction.
