The present paper aims to highlight the dynamics of discursive strategies registered, at the end of the XIIIth century, by the medieval preaching guides (artes praedicandi) during the process of a sociological and cultural extension of the illocutory sources of moral tenure, beyond the limits of the ecclesiastic universe. As such, the work of Don Juan Manuel, upstanding laic moralist and political thinker of the XIVth Castilian century, reshapes the functional structure of the sermo thematicus in order to transform it into an instrument of self-reflexive authorship and of political adjustment of personal status.
