Abstract:The article explores the creation and publishing of the collection of Romanian fairy tales Walachischemährchen (Stuttgart, 1845) by the brothers Arthur and Albert Schott, focusing on Arthur Schott’s residence in Oravița. The book contains folk narratives that were collected by Arthur Schott mainly in the Highland Banat region, being the first compilationof this kind on the territory of present-day Romania. These stories reflect the national and regional identity of the Romanians in Banat, which was to change over time. The fact that this book was published by two German brothers from Baden-Württemberg under the influence of the Grimm brothers shows the positive influence the use of the German language had for the Banat region, as it made cultural exchange easier. Although the editor Albert Schott was criticised for trying to find a common myth like that of Perseus or Persephone in the stories, even when there was very little evidence for it, the collection was well received by German as well as Romanian critics. The book was translated into Romanian as late as 2003, though at the time of its publishing it was one of very few ethnological works that had an influence on the image of the Banat region in the West.
